Istanbul, May 2014
Today I'm leaving for a week-long trip to Istanbul. As many of you know, I lived in Istanbul for three years in the mid-90s; my last visit was in 2000. In the last decade, Istanbul has experienced intense change. When I left, the population was about 9 million - now it is almost 15 million. Metro and light rail, both just ideas when I was there, transport millions around the city every day. In the 90s, Istanbul had 2 shopping malls. Now there are too many to list, and more are in development. In many ways I will be visiting an unknown city, a brand new city. I'm excited to discover the new things, and hope to catch glimpses of the old.
